CTCH 203 Introduction to Media and Communication - University of Regina
Objective: For this assignment you will be asked to examine and critically respond to some of the approaches to mass media and communications that we've covered in the course readings, specifically:
• Adomo and Horkheimer's critique of mass media and consumer culture
• Harold Innis' analysis of time and space biased forms of communication
• The Ideological critique developed by Stuart Hall
• Marshal McLuhan's "medium is message" approach to mass communications
Each of these approaches presents a different perspective on mass communications as well as a set of specific criticisms of mass media. For this assignment you should select ONE of these approaches and write a short (5-6 page double spaces - not including a the cover sheet or reference page) critical response essay.
You are free to formulate your response as you choose and to narrow in on specific forms of communications technologies/techniques and/or medium/media. You should be sure to include a brief summary of the approach that you have selected, where you think it may be applicable and where you think it might be limited, over-generalized, or flat-out wrong.
Format: Assignments should be in paragraph form. Please keep margins and fonts to reasonable size. Note: You must reference any citations (author, title, page number(s)) and should limit individual citations to no more than three or four sentences. If you paraphrase an author you must also reference them - failure to do so constitutes plagiarism (please refer to the academic calendar for more information).
