Question: Sepsis is life threatening and can occur when your body is fighting off an infection. The infection triggers a domino effect throughout the body, causing organ dysfunction and causing hyper or hypothermia, tachycardia, tachypnea, and septic shock in hospitals, which currently occur at an estimated 60% (Jarczak et al., 2021). Sepsis is considered a global healthcare issue and is associated with mortality. Nutritional recommendations in sepsis include protein of 1 g /kg/day, lipids of 1.5 g/kg/day, glucose of 1.5 g/kg/day, and fluids of 1 ml/kg/hour. Total parental nutrition is also recommended early on for those at risk for malnutrition (De Waele et al., 2020). Diet post sepsis should be followed carefully as the body replenishes and recharges with the consumption of food. Olives, salmon, and tuna are examples of healthy fats that are crucial for giving the body the protein it needs to build muscle mass. For patients with sepsis and septic shock, vitamin C, thiamine, and hydrocortisone are supportive treatments.
