As you read this novel, you'll encounter objects, events, ideas, lifestyles, and even a writing style that may seem new to you. Understanding these things will help to increase your comprehension of the novel and to appreciate Harper Lee's remarkable craft as a writer. For your paper, you will choose an item in the novel and explore that topic from a factual and literary focus.

Your task:

1. Choose one topic from the list below.
2. Research factual info about your chosen topic and explain your topic.
3. Identify where your topic surfaces in To Kill a Mockingbird.
4. Consider how your topic enhances the story. Your thesis will focus on how your chosen topic affects the story. For example, we will discuss in class how the rabies issue actually develops characterization, theme, and foreshadowing.

Paper must be: four-pages, typed, double-spaced with 1" margins, using MLA format and documentation. The paper must include proper parenthetical documentation and a Works Cited page with at least 3 works cited. One source will be the novel.

During the writing process, we will visit our school library to learn about research and MLA style. You can also consult hups://owl.english.purdue.edu for all your citation needs.
