Essay to critique:
The Diné bahane' is a human-centered myth because the center of the myth is all about humans. The myth does not start out this way, however. The Air-Spirit People are bugs and bats, and this means that the animals are beneath the humans. The fact that it takes the Air-Spirit People three times to understand that adultery is wrong proves that they are sub-human. The real Navajo people are made out of corn.
Clearly, the most important aspect of this creation myth begins with the creation of humans out of corn. This happens in the fourth world. Four is a sacred number in the Native American belief system. This is why First Woman has two sets of twins, which equals four. Gradually, the Navajo learn about social structures and how to behave. For example, they learn that masturbation is wrong when the men and women separate on the two sides of the river. The divine beings rarely interfere with the activities of humans, except to offer then occasional guidance. Therefore, we can say that the Native Americans are not a very religious people. There are not any rituals described in this myth like the ones seen in the Ancient Near East.
There is an axis mundi in this myth, which is the reed that connects the fourth and fifth world. The fifth world is the most advanced. People learn the critical elements of structuring a society, such as various social taboos. There is very little discussion about where plants and animals come from. This makes the myth human-centered.
