Scales of Measurement

Quantitative researchers collect data and assign numbers to their observations. An important concept in understanding variables is the scales of measurement. There are four scales of measurement-nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio. These four scales of measurement are routinely reviewed in introductory statistics textbooks as the classic way of differentiating measurements. However, the boundaries between the measurement scales are fuzzy. For example, is intelligence quotient (IQ) measured on the ordinal or interval scale?
