I do not believe that Lia's life was ruined by cross-cultural misunderstandings, but I do believe that that the cross-cultural misunderstandings contributed to unnecessary medical setbacks and shortened her life expectancy. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2017), epilepsy accounts for approximately $15.5 billion in direct and indirect costs per each year. Postpone acknowledgement of seizures and inadequate treatment can increase an individual''s risk of continuous seizures, brain damage, injuries, disability, and early death. Over one-third of the population with epilepsy proceed to have seizures despite treatment and medications therefore even if Lia's parents where adhering to a strict treatment plan who is to say the same medical outcome would not have happened. I also do believe that the patient-family-physician relationships is essential concerning communication pertaining to quality, safety, and coordination of care. The lack of effective communication among Patient-family-physician relationships can lead to incorrect patient's diagnosis or treatment, higher costs, delays in treatment and lower patient satisfaction (Schyve, 2007). The Lee family did not get the privilege of having a health professional that was willing or able to work in collaboration with them regarding their daughter''s health (Fadiman, 1998).. Medical care should be provided in a way the individual's'' cultures, values, health practices and beliefs are acknowledged and respected without any prejudices or bias opinions.

I do not believe that Lia's life was ruined by cross-cultural misunderstandings. I believe that these cross-cultural misunderstandings complicated her life drastically, but I wouldn't say it was completely ruined. Many customs and traditions that the Hmong had seemed very unusual when compared to the practices in other regions and in the modern medical society. These differences made it more difficult for Lia in her times of need and complicated her treatment to a certain extent but, there were aspects of the traditional culture that they believe still worked as far as providing healing and protection for her during her medical ordeal. The Hmong are a different people and their practices and customs might be deemed as strange, odd, or weird to the outside world due to their bizarre nature in some cases. Even though Lia experienced many hardships as a result of the confusion caused by numerous cross-cultural misunderstandings, I believe she benefited from both sides of the spectrum. I say this mainly due to the fact that she was raised
