Vibration and machine dynamics Assessment -

Project: Assessing quality of a suspension system

Background - Road unevenness can create dynamical effects on vehicle passengers thus reducing level of comfort and increasing health hazards. A major function of suspension systems is to absorb and dissipate these effects in a systematic and reliable fashion. However, over time, the performance of suspension systems can deteriorate due to various wear and tear effects. AS 2670.1-2001(+A1) is a good source of information on the health hazards passengers are subjected to as a result of body vibration over nominated periods of time. This is quantified by breaking down a measured acceleration signal to various harmonics.

Project description - Students need to enrol in teams of maximum 5 members using the link provided on Moodle. Teams are required to perform the following:

1. Collect acceleration data of a passenger car driving along a small section of a road of your choice (i.e.: Yankee Flat Road or Victoria Street, Ballarat East). Note that it is preferable that you can drive at a constant speed on that section of the road.

2. Determine using the qualitative method presented in the above Australian Standard (AS 2670.1-2001(+A1)), the max allowable driving time on a road of this quality.

3. Discuss the results reflecting on whether the outcome of question 2 above can be improved by modifying the car suspension components.

4. Present findings in a concise neatly typed report with graphs and references etc.
