Employment Package Assignment -
When you finish your post-secondary education, your employment package will help you obtain employment. For this project, you will create an employment package for a current job posting of your choice. Your Employment Package will include:
1. Job Posting: A job posting provides detailed information to applicants regarding the type of employee the organization is looking for. Submit an electronic copy of a current job posting and underline or highlight the key skills, abilities and qualifications required by the organization in the posting. The job posting should have a recent 2019 date.
2. Resume: Your resume needs to be completed with care. Be sure to think about what you have to offer that best matches the needs of the current job posting selected. At a minimum include the following categories in your chronological, skills, or functional resume:
a. Your name and contact information
b. Summary of qualifications (also called a 'Profile' statement)
i. Must be relevant to the job posting
c. Education
d. Work Experience
e. References; can be fictitious references
As well, construct your resume by applying the following guidelines:
1. Use action verbs in past and/or present tense to emphasize your skills & qualifications.
2. Use phrases & sentence fragments to briefly present relevant information. Complete sentences are acceptable if brief.
3. Avoid using 'I' in your resume.
4. Construct listed items using a parallel structure.
5. Construct your resume to be one full page or two full pages.
3. Job Application (Cover) Letter: Your cover letter is an exceptionally important document. It should always be personalized to the company to which you are applying. Do your homework and find out about the organization. The look of the cover letter needs to be professional and free of spelling and grammatical errors. Complete a solicited job application letter as discussed in LO4 & 5 of Chapter 13 in text book; see Figure 13.9 and 13.10.
4. Research: It is extremely important that before an employment interview you research the organization. Construct a one page memo to your instructor outlining five current pieces of information about the organization you are applying to. Gather information about the organization in the job posting using several of the following methods:
1) Check the organization's Web site and social media.
2) Read the company's annual report.
3) Read articles in trade publications and newspapers such as the The Globe and Mail or National Post.
4) Read recruiting literature provided by the company.
5. Interview Questions: Interview preparation is extremely important. You must have experiences to draw upon to ensure you demonstrate that you have the skills, abilities, and experiences to be a successful candidate for any job. Examine the qualifications and job responsibilities listed in the job posting. Based on this information, compile a list of 10 interview questions that you believe will be asked to determine if you are qualified for the job. Identify if the person doing the interview is the supervisor, HR person or panel. Prepare detailed answers to these questions. Your interview questions must be both behavioural and situational questions.
6. Your Question: prepare a question that you would like to ask the person doing the hiring and submit how you feel they would answer that question.
