Construct three separate mutual fund investment portfolios for the client scenarios below. Make sure you explain "why" the mutual funds you are recommending are suitable to the clients risk profile and objective(s). You should also make reference to the mutual fund objective, performance, risk, fees, and any other relevant facts that support the fund recommendations. The overall plan should be typed 12pt font double spaced and you need to include a print out and/or summary of each fund you are recommending along with specific dollar amounts that will be allocated to each mutual fund.

I. Portfolio One:

This client, Sally Thomson, has just received $1,000,000 from the sale of a clothing business and she wants to invest the proceeds in mutual funds. She is 44 years old and is currently unemployed. Her primary objective is to invest the proceeds from the business to generate an income of $60,000 per year before taxes. She may want to start another business at some point so she does not want to risk losing all of the money. Her risk profile is medium risk and she can tolerate a maximum annual decline in the portfolio of 10%. Her investment knowledge is low.

Required:

1. Create a mutual fund portfolio for Sally that uses at least four different mutual funds consistent with her risk and objectives. Explain the reasons for your recommendations and why the funds are suitable.

2. Sally also wants to know how her investment income will be taxed and how much she can expect to receive net of taxes.

3. If Sally wants to pay as little tax as possible what type of investment income should she generate on the portfolio and why?

4. What is Sally's marginal tax rate?

5. If she starts working and generates $60,000 of gross employment income what can she do to reduce/defer the taxes on the investment income?

II. Portfolio Two:

Betty Anne just had a baby boy named Roland and she wants to put aside money for his education. It is expected that he will attend University at his age 17. Betty Anne's investment knowledge is low and her risk tolerance is medium but she wants the portfolio to focus on growth given the long time horizon. She wants to maximize the education savings grant but she will not qualify for any supplemental grants given her high income. Assume a 10% annual compound return.

Required:

1. Determine the future value at this RESP at Roland's age 17 and create a mutual fund portfolio with at least two different funds that is consistent with a growth objective and a long term investment horizon.

2. Betty Anne also wants to know what will happen to the plan if Roland does not attend a qualifying post secondary institution (3 Marks).
3. Also, is the RESP tax advantaged in any way?

III. Portfolio Three:

This client, Mrs. Radcliffe, is recently retired and has $800,000 in her RRIF which is invested in redeemable term deposits. She is currently 72 years of age and expects to live to at least age 90. Her risk tolerance is low to moderate and her investment knowledge is low.

Required:

1. Create a suitable mutual fund portfolio for Mrs. Radcliffe with at least four different mutual fund recommendations.

2. How much income is she required to withdraw from the plan at age 72?

3. If she wants to preserve the value of the RRIF as much as possible for her beneficiary how would you structure the investments so that her income needs are also met but within the context of creating a portfolio that is low to moderate risk tolerance.
