Case Study

Task: create a shopping centre display

Sunshine Shire Local Council is a thriving multicultural coastal town of approximately 400,000 people. Local businesses have invested heavily in developing and promoting Sunshine as a new and exciting summer tourist destination. The campaign has been hugely successful, however, there are concerns that local residents are not engaging with the diverse array of restaurants, hotels, cafes and nightclubs during the off-peak season. These concerns are supported by the results of a recent ratepayer survey.

The Council is very keen to engage the resident community and wants to push a "Holiday All-Year Round" message to generate more event and hospitality busines from the local customers in the Shire. The campaign will last 2 months.

They want to promote the idea by creating a display in a prominent area of Sunshine Shire Shopping Mall. They can provide you with some help via a Promotions Assistant The area is a prime spot, currently used (not very successfully) as a spoon-polishing kiosk.

This display will change every week, each time highlighting a different hospitality business from the area. Each business is prepared to offer locals special rates and other incentives.

You are to create a promotional display or stand that highlights a specific hospitality venue from the Shire. It must be completed and available for viewing by the Council in seven days' time.

Part A: Written Report

The Council requires you to submit a 3-page report outlining the process of planning your promotional display or stand based on the above scenario. Using the template in Appendix A, complete the report including comments on each of the following steps:

1. Identify the display and stand objectives and timelines based on your consultation with the Sunshine Shire Council as described in the scenario. Outline how you have determined these.

2. Describe operational information to assist in display or stand preparation, including a draft budget, display environment and its location within the premises.

3. Identify the display type, how it meets the target audience needs, and describe how your display or stand will look.

4. List the required display supplies and method of transportation.

5. Identify and outline what assistance you have gained from a display specialist to assist in your choice of display supplies. What information and suggestions did they make to assist you based on their current knowledge of available supplies to meet your needs?

6. Outline the decisions made to create and dress the display or stand using available materials and supplies.

7. Identify the elements and principles of design used in the creation of the display or stand.

8. Describe the display techniques that have been used to maximise visual appeal.

9. Identify the ways in which the display equipment will be used correctly and safely.

10. Outline how the display or stand will be created to ensure your safety and that of shopping mall staff and visitors.

11. Record the process you have undertaken to create and deliver the event display or stand, working within the time and financial constraints.

Part B: Portfolio (based on the scenario and Part A)

To support the plan you have outlined in your Written Report, create a 7 - 10 page portfolio, which must include the following visual materials and operational information:

1. Design plan - Include a hand-drawn or computer-generated sketch illustrating the appearance of the stand/display, with a short written description of key elements.

2. Floor plan - Include a hand-drawn or computer-generated sketch including key display elements such as structures, walls and large pieces of equipment, from a bird's eye view illustrating the area of the stand and overall structure.

3. Colour and design palate - Include samples (at least 3 images) such as colours, textures, contrasts and images

4. Display supplies - Include at least 5 images of items you will use such as panels, banners, audio-visual systems and furniture

5. Dressing materials - Include at least 4 images of materials such as decorations, balloons and floral arrangements

6. Marketing collateral  - Include at least 3 images of samples such as posters, flyers, banners and competition entry forms

7. Prototype - Include at least 3 photographs taken progressively throughout the building of the display or stand. You may create the display or stand using an existing table at home or in the workplace, or using cardboard. At least one photo must be taken at the beginning of your construction, and one at completion. The completion photo should feature a person to give an idea of the scale.

Samples of display supplies, dressing materials, photographs, images, sketches, mood boards, fabric swatches and sample collateral should be included to reflect all the visual elements used in the display or stand to meet the set objectives.

The samples you choose to use can be cut from magazines, newspapers and other printed materials. You can use fabric samples, paint swatches, images or sketches printed from sources on the internet or other electronic materials, photographs you have taken, as well as your own drawings. Feel free to include any other materials which you could use in the design and decoration of your display or stand.

When you create your prototype, it should be on a 1:1 scale (actual size) - not a model. However, for this assessment you can construct it from cardboard, recycled materials or existing items from home such as tables or storage racks. You should take a series of photographs to highlight all features of the prototype.
