Assignment: Normal probabilities
You work in the HR department for a corporation in a major city. Your employees have been complaining about the length of their commutes to work because of heavy traffic. You have a meeting with City Planning to discuss the need for additional public transportation, and you want to prepare yourself with some data. You send around a survey to 100 employees.
1) Download the dataset and save onto your computer: PH303_commutes.sav
2) Start SPSS and open the dataset. The data include the employee ID as well as their commute time in minutes.
3) Create a histogram of the data, using cut-points at:
<50 minutes, 50-59 minutes, 60-69 minutes, 70-79 minutes, 80-89 minutes, 90+ minutes Answer the following questions, assuming that the commute times are normally distributed.
1) What is the probability that a person commutes more than 40 minutes to work per day? Express your answer as a percentage with two decimal points.
2) What is the probability that someone commutes between 60 and 75 minutes per day? Express your answer as a percentage with two decimal points.
3) If the lowest 25% of commute times are considered "short commutes" and the highest 25% of commute times are considered "long commutes", what are the cut-off commute times in minutes that define short and long commutes, respectively? Express your answers as minutes with two decimal points.
