Assignment: Hypothesis testing
You have been given an expanded subset of data from the Vermont 2017 BRFSS interviews. We'll be using this dataset for the next few SPSS assignments.
1) Download the dataset and save onto your computer: PH303_BRFSS_dataset1.sav
2) Check out the variables in the dataset, particularly the Labels and Values, to get a feel for the data that is included.
Use SPSS to complete the following:
1) You are interested in BMI and found historical data from 2016 showing that the mean BMI for women was 27.2 kg/m2 and the mean BMI for men was 27.7 kg/m2
a. Is the mean BMI for women in the 2017 data significantly different from the 2016 data? Use a 5% level of significance. Paste the output table from your analysis.
b. Is the mean BMI for men in the 2017 data significantly different from the 2016 data? Use a 5% level of significance. Paste the output table from your analysis.
c. Is there a significant difference between the mean BMI for men and women in 2017? Use a 5% level of significance. Paste the output table from your analysis.
2) You are interested in the development of prediabetes (also known as insulin resistance) among already obese men (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2) and want to test the following hypothesis using SPSS:
The mean BMI for obese men who have been told that they are prediabetic is different than the mean BMI for obese men who have never been told that they are prediabetic.
H0 : µ1 = µ2
H1 : µ1 ≠ µ2
Test this hypothesis using the following steps in SPSS:
a) Create a filter to select only men with BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2. How many men fall into this group?
b) What is the mean BMI and standard deviation for these obese men? Paste the table showing the descriptive statistics.
c) What is the mean BMI among obese men who have been told that they are prediabetic? Among obese men who have never been told that they are prediabetic? (Note that there is some missing data regarding prediabetes, so your sample size for these results will be smaller than the total in part a)
d) Is there a significant difference between the mean of the groups in part c? Paste the output table from your analysis and interpret the significance of the results in a sentence.
