Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this unit, students will be able to:
a) construct a genogram in the context of a relationship counselling session
b) utilise information collected in the assessment stage to hypothesise about relationship dynamics, drawing on systems theory, and identify potential interventions
c) assess clients' suitability for family counselling
d) identify and discuss family issues, and apply models of family therapy to assessment and intervention
e) develop and apply counselling skills for working with families and couples
Assignment: Relationship Counselling Case Study
Purpose:
An important aspect of family and relationship counselling is that rather than the intrapersonal, it focuses upon the interpersonal. It considers circular concepts of causality rather than lineal. Therefore, the purpose of this assignment is to encourage students to deliberate upon multi-generational patterns of behaviour rather than focusing on individual pathology. This assignment aims to give students the opportunity to be better placed to conceptualise and practice systemically when working with their own clients in the future
Students may need to read ahead to Section 9 in order to adequately address this assignment task
Process:
From the information provided in the case study, and in the role of relationship counsellor:
• construct a genogram for the couple
• create hypotheses about the couple's dynamics using concepts from systems theory
• identify their strengths and challenges
• develop questions to test the hypotheses
• develop a summary to be provided as feedback to the couple The case study is provided on the next page.
Sarah and John - Case Study
Consider the Sarah and John Case Study and address the following:
1. Construct a genogram based upon the information provided
2. Create hypotheses about the couple's dynamics using concepts from systems theory
3. Identify the couple's strengths and challenges
4. Develop questions to test the hypotheses
5. Develop a summary to be provided as feedback to the couple
6. Reference to relevant literature, linking your ideas to theory discussed in the unit
7. Proper structure, referencing, and so on, as per the Learning support website
