Experiment - Thermography - Thermal Imaging

Aim and objectives of thermal imaging experiment

1.1 Aim:

The aim of this experiment is to conduct a non-destructive testing using Thermography or thermal imaging to check any abnormal condition of the Machine specifically to detect overheating and hot spots.

1.2 Objectives:

- To conduct thermal imaging tests for mechanical set-up
- To determine increase of temperature after running the machine
- To simulate fault such as misalignment and determine any increase of temperature of some important parts such as coupling or bearings
- To study the importance of thermography in various industrial application

Theoretical background

Infrared thermography (IRT), thermal imaging, and thermal video are examples of infrared imaging science. Thermographic cameras usually detect radiation in the long-infrared range of the electromagnetic spectrum (roughly 9,000-14,000 nanometers or9-14 µm) and produce images of that radiation, called thermograms.

Thermal monitoring is important for components which generate, transfer or store energy as heat. Electrical department were the first to benefit from the use of a Thermal imaging cameras to obtain temperature distribution maps across electrical panels, looking for hot spots from loose connections. Typical items that are monitored are thermal insulation, bearing housings, coolant/lubricant, heat exchangers, electrical wiring, fuse-boxes, circuit boards, transformers, motors, etc.

Any temperature rises may be caused by damaged/perished thermal and electrical Insulation, incorrect electrical loading, and friction due to rubbing components

Procedure

- Using the Centrifugal blower set-up, perform a thermal monitoring for
Various parts of the set-up i.e. motor, fan, coupling, bearing, control panel, etc.
- Turn On the centrifugal blower and allow it to run for 15 -minutes. Set the
Speed to 1000 rpm.
- Turn ON the FLIR thermal imaging camera and set the following configuration.
Image Mode: Thermal MSX
Measurement: Auto Hot Spot
Color: Rainbow
Temperature Scale: Auto
- Pull the trigger and save the following images of;
- entire centrifugal blower , bearing parts, coupling, fan part, control panel
- Save the images and download in the computer.
- Analyze the images and assess the temperature profile
