ICT Research Principles
Assessment - Practical Quantitative Research Exercise
Description: This practical exercise will engage students in a quantitative research exercise that will enable students to directly deploy skills, tools and techniques covered in the unit. Each student will be required to complete the exercise and prepare a written report that displays their level of quantitative research understanding and competence.
Objectives of Assignment:
• To increase understanding of the skills required to collect, analyse, and interpret quantitative research data.
• To increase understanding of the relationships between data collection, data analysis and interpretation when conducting quantitative ICT research.
• To develop skills and competence in the conduct of quantitative ICT research.
#1 Produce a research artefact by investigating an ICT-related problem
#2 Apply different research methodologies to conduct ethical ICT research
In this assignment, we will investigate the luggage handling system's efficiency at Melbourne Airport. You have been presented with data across four terminals (T1, T2, T3, T4) in Melbourne Airport from 1 January 2018 to 31 December 2019. The airport is interested in (1) understanding the efficiency of the luggage handling system across the 4 terminals and (2) gauging if the automatic luggage scanners have made a difference (negative/positive) in the efficiency of the luggage handling process. The researchers collected data on the average time taken for the first suitcase to arrive on the baggage carousel across all flights in a day. They also collected data on the total amount of luggage in the same time period. On 1 Jan 2019, the airport introduced the automatic luggage handling system in Terminals 2 and 3.
Requirements:
Your task is to select and apply statistical analysis techniques to examine the data and address the airport's interest.
1. Provide a detailed dataset description using descriptive statistics and appropriate visualisation techniques.
2. Informed by the data visualisation and descriptive statistics, formulate research questions and hypotheses to address the airport's interest with justifications.
3. Conduct a statistical test to test each hypothesis.
- Provide descriptive statistics of the relevant data.
- Select and justify an appropriate statistical test(s) required for the test.
- Compute the appropriate statistical test.
- Discuss the statistical test results. (Repeat item #3 for each of the hypotheses)
4. Discussion of the overall statistical tests with respect to the airport's interest.
The output of your analysis will be a PDF report, including a title page, table of contents, page numbering, introduction/conclusion, appropriate headings and subheadings with Harvard referencing style.
Analysis Tool: JASP software used in the tutorial.
