Assessment Task:
Overview
In Assessment Task, you will conduct a search of the academic evidence to write a brief literature review. This will inform the development of a qualitative aim/research question. This assignment provides a good opportunity to practice skills in setting up a research study, particularly as these typically begin with a review of the literature and the identification of research problems.
Unit Learning Outcomes assessed by AT1: ULO1 Formulate study design specific research aims, questions and hypotheses.

Instructions
A literature review is a critical analysis of the most relevant, recent and scholarly work published on the topic of interest. It is not just a summary of articles or an analytical, opinionative or argumentative essay. The three key points of a literature review are:
What the research says
How the research was carried out
What is missing, i.e. the gap that your research intends to fill
Literature reviews should be concise, with no irrelevant information, ideas or words.
1. Choose your topic
According to the Strategic Priority Area 1.3 Critical life stages in the National Strategic Framework for Chronic Conditions, the transition for young people from dependent children to independent adults is an important life stage, particularly in terms of education and career paths, employment and financial decisions; relationships with family and friends; susceptibility to mental illness; and exposure to environmental and behavioural risk factors, including UV exposure, smoking, alcohol and drug use, and physical inactivity.
Your task is to conduct a search of the academic literature to write a brief literature review based on one of the following topics, drawn from the National Strategic Framework for Chronic Conditions:
UV (sun) exposure in Australian young adults
Stress in Australian university students
Illicit drug use among young people in Australia
Further details about the National Strategic Framework can be found in Topic 1.
2. Search the literature and prepare your review
Use the Deakin Library databases (or Google Scholar) to search the literature on your chosen topic.
Your review of the literature must demonstrate the significance of the issue under examination and the gaps in the research evidence. You are required to locate a minimum of 10 references (but you can include additional relevant references). For example, if you read two articles with similar findings, you can cite more than one source for the one statement (e.g. Qualitative research focuses on people's experiences of events or phenomena (Creswell 2015; Liamputtong 2017)).
The literature review should be approximately 800 words.
Please refer to Topic 3: The research process (in particular the reading by Talbot and Verrinder (2008) and online resources) for assistance with preparing your literature review.
3. Write your qualitative research aim/question
You need to develop a research aim/question that can be answered using qualitative research. This aim/question will form the basis of Assessment Task 2. Please refer to Topic 3: The research process (in particular the video recording and readings) for assistance with developing your research aim/question.
4. Check your literature review
You need to state your research aim/question at the end of your literature review. Note that your aim/question is likely to be around 20 words.
Word count: 800 words +/- 10%. Please state your word count on your assignment.
