Assignment - Literature Review on Transitional Issues
Conduct a literature review on transitional issues that individuals with disabilities encounter as they progress into adulthood.
Students will include the following:
Description of transition (What is it, when does it happen, when to begin preparation?) (See Odom, Horner, Snell, & Blancher, Handbook of developmental disabilities, Chapters 18-22.)
Protections, services, and rights for adults included in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
Students will discuss at least 3 issues not limited to:
- Further education, vocation training
- Vocational and/or career options
- Financial matters (income, assistance, aid, etc)
- Independent, semi-independent, non-independent living
Keep in mind: hygiene, nutrition, exercise, safety, housing, medical care, psychiatric care, family life, quality of life, etc.
- Relationships: Social and Romantic
- Reproduction/having children, raising children
- Self Advocacy
- Legal matters (Power of attorney, etc.)
One reflection page (at the end of the literature review) including how the information researched and obtained will assist them in their current or future work in the field. Students should provide at least one real-world example and/or case study to exemplify how the information will be utilized.
