Bella, a nurse in the Emergency Unit of Surrey Memorial Hospital, was addicted to opiates and stole narcotics from the hospital and patients to feed her habit. She overmedicated a patient and prescribed too much medication, causing the patient to go into cardiac arrest. She was investigated and found to be incoherent and self-medicating with painkillers for her back. Bella was suspended for four weeks and was told to enter into a rehab facility. After completing rehab, she signed a practicing agreement with the College of Registered Nurses to certify she had gone through detox and agreed to enter into a monitoring agreement as she works in a safety-sensitive position. Bella, a nurse, accidentally took Tylenol 3 for a migraine, which resulted in a positive drug test for opiates. Her employer terminated her for breaching her monitoring agreement with the nursing board and concerns about patient safety, leading her union, BCNU, to file a grievance for unjust termination.
