This week's readings revolved around the concept of strain as a possible cause of criminal behavior. Within this concept is legal debts that are imposed at sentencing through court fees, surcharges, community supervision fees and prison fees. These additional financial sanctions can negatively cause strain for the offender but family as well, more so for low-income offenders who likely have less discretionary income. Beyond restitution obligations to make victims whole, should the legal system impose additional financial obligations like those listed in our textbook? Why or why not? Are there other means the court can impose to hold offenders accountable and make society whole other than through legal debts?
