Renato Rosaldo, William Flores, and Rina Benmayor have developed the concept of cultural citizenship within the Latinx context to name how communities of struggle refuse to accept the unfulfilled promise of citizenship and contest those apparatuses that deny them access to full citizenship by creating and organizing spaces of cultural citizenship to sustain their resistance, inclusion, and autonomy. As some have interpreted it, cultural citizenship is the exercise of the right to be different within the matrix of culture, identity, and public life. These "insubordinate spaces" as George Lipsitz and Barbara Tomlinson name them, are sites of "new practices, new politics, and new polities," and, we might argue, new identities. Thus, the premise of cultural citizenship is that such spaces, not only for Latinx communities, are necessary given the history as well as economic, political, social, and cultural structure of the U.S. Drawing from this and other readings in this course, do you agree such spaces are necessary and that these spaces can make full citizenship for people who claim a range of identities a reality?
