An alternative scheme for using the velocity probe described in Problem 9.5 is to place it in the middle of the pipe, where the velocity is expected to be 2.0 times the average velocity. Compute the amount of insertion required to center the probe. Then, if the accuracy of placement is again plus or minus 5.0 mm, compute the possible error in measuring the average velocity.
Problem 9.5
A small velocity probe is to be inserted through a pipe wall. If we measure from the outside of the DN 150 Schedule 80 pipe, how far (in mm) should the probe be inserted to sense the average velocity if the flow in the pipe is laminar?
Air at 300 kPa, 63oC, and a velocity of 423 m/s enters an insulated duct of varying cross-sectional area. The air exits at 150 kPa, 88oC. At the inlet, the cross-sectional area is 6.57 cm2. Assuming the ideal gas model for the air and variable specif..

Steam at 2000 psi and 1200 deg F enters a turbine operating at steady state. Partway through the turbine, 34% of the entering mass flow is extracted at 700 psi and 600 deg F. The rest of the steam exits the turbine as a saturated vapour at 1 psi. The..
A rigid tank contains water vapor at 200 degrees celcius and unknown pressure. When the tank is cooled to 150 degrees celcius, the vapor starts condensing. Estimate the initial pressure in the tank.
An electric heater heats air. The temperature sensor has a time constant of 5 seconds. The air temperature output (in °C), as measured by the temperature probe is: T=200+cos(0.5t)
