Research Essay Assignment -
This assessment is based around you writing a mini research article. You are asked by a senior researcher to complete a report on a specific research question and given data to analyse, write up and make some conclusion. For Assessment, you need to complete the task set by a fictitious absent-minded professor, and provide the 'Data', 'Methods', 'Results' and 'Conclusion' paragraphs, as requested; and your submission must conform to APA writing standards.
The task and the existing report paragraphs (in PDF format), as well as the relevant data set (in SPSS format), are provided.
The requirements are - You need to complete the following request set by a fictitious absentminded professor. You can find the dataset on the course website in the course Assessments area. You need to provide the Data, Methods, Results, and Conclusions paragraphs.
I've accidentally triple booked myself and can't complete the evaluation of fear of crime on the Gold Coast. Can you have a look at the data and have a go at knocking something up? No pressure - none at all - but the Gold Coast Council is extremely interested in our findings and a substantial research funding opportunity may hinge on our work.
The data set contains information collected from the 2019 Gold Coast Community Survey. This self-administered mail survey was designed to examine residents' fear of crime and identify factors associated with these perceptions. The variables believed to affect residents' fear of crime include their demographic characteristics (i.e., respondent's age, gender, socio-economic status, and prior victimisation), source of news and information about crime on the Gold Coast, and community characteristics (i.e., perceived neighbourhood disorder and perceived sense of community). Note that participants were randomly selected and that their demographics were found to be representative of the broader Gold Coast population.
There were a number of issues related to fear of crime that the Council is particularly interested in. You need to explore these using inferential tests - If the Council wants to take action they won't be able to move forward on the back of descriptive statistics alone! So, if you find anything noteworthy, you should definitely flag it.
Remember, the Conclusions section cannot have any statistical gobbledegook and needs to be understandable to an intelligent adult. It should contain a concise statement of the meaning of the findings, not just a summary of the preceding statistics.
FEAR OF CRIME - Existing Paragraphs
1. Research Question
The Gold Coast is often portrayed by the media as the crime capital of Queensland. Public debate regarding how to respond to this apparent crime problem and the resulting increased fear of crime within the community is largely based on anecdotal evidence. Hence, there is a clear need for empirical evidence on the effectiveness of current strategies employed by the Gold Coast Council to address fear of crime among community residents. The current study sought to answer the following three research questions:
1. Are demographic characteristics of community residents related to fear of crime?
2. Is the source of news and information about crime on the Gold Coast related community residents' fear of crime?
3. Are community characteristics related to residents' fear of crime?
