Individual Determinants of Health
Assessment: WORKING WITH OLDER ADULTS
SYNOPSIS
Imagine that you are a student about to begin your final placement. Prior to commencing your placement, you are required to complete a reflective task which involves examining the hospital records, both past and present, of Rosa Calapari, a patient currently on the ward.
Following the examination of Rosa's hospital records (case-specific resources), you are required to complete a written reflection combining theory (via a health-related topic you have learnt about over the semester), with your own experiences, thoughts, attitudes, and beliefs.
In order to prepare your assessment task successfully you will need to do the following:
Read this document in detail;
Examine the assessment task questions carefully;
Consult the key case-scenario (found in the Assessment tab > Assessment 3: Individual Reflective Piece [30%] - Enquiry 3 > Enquiry 3_Case Scenario of Rosa Calapari
Consult key learning resources in your weekly modules for the background knowledge and to assist you in choosing a health-related topic.
Examine and combine the multiple sources of information to build a rich reflection.
KEY PEOPLE IN THE ENQUIRY
ROSA: an older woman in her 80's, with an extensive medical history. Rosa presented to the emergency department of a major hospital with both acute and chronic health issues, all of which are influencing her behaviour, communication, and adherence to treatment.
YOU: a student about to commence your final placement. Your task is to examine Rosa's hospital records and complete a reflective writing piece.
IMPORTANCE OF REFLECTIVE PRACTICE
According to Gibbs (1998):
"It is not sufficient simply to have an experience in order to learn. Without reflecting upon this experience, it may quickly be forgotten, or its learning potential lost. It is from the feelings and thoughts emerging from this reflection that generalisations or concepts can be generated. And it is generalisations that allow new situations to be tackled effectively."
Reflective practice is seen as a means of improving clinical practice and consequently quality of care, through exploring and evaluating one's understanding of a problem rather than simply trying
to solve it (Leung, Pluye, Grad, & Weston, 2010). Reflective practice is crucial in continuous development and re-assessment of skills when working in health care, or with people more generally.
A reflective practitioner:
Reflects on feedback and integrates changes into practice;
Reflects on how one's own perceptions, attitudes and beliefs impact practice;
Identifies knowledge deficits and seeks clarification; and
Ensures procedures for safety and quality assurance are implemented.
Clearly identify one health-related topic (choose from any of the PHE1IDH weekly topics e.g., memory, pain, psychological disorders, health-risk behaviours) that you might be challenged by when working with Rosa. /5 marks
