Question: Response to this - My patient is a 39-year old male who presents to the clinic with signs and symptoms of constipation. He's a non-smoker and only drinks alcohol twice a month. He's allergic to aspirin, and he's currently HCTZ 25mg by mouth daily. He states that he has been unable to effectively move his bowel for the past two months.

He reports his last bowel movement was about four days ago. He describes the stool as pebble-like and hard with significant amount of pain and straining. In an effort to remedy the situation, he has taken psyllium, magnesium oxide, polyethylene glycol, and even increased his fluid intake with no signs of relief, and has proven unsuccessful. He was assessed by the NP and his physical was remarkable. His vitals were also within normal limits excepts for his BP that was slightly elevated. BP: 131/87, HR: 83, RR: 19, O2Sat: 96% on room air, Temp: 98.8. Based on Mr. Barroso's complaints and signs and symptoms, the CPG recommends increased dietary fiber supplements intake with adequate fluid intake, lifestyle modifications like exercise as a first-line treatment therapy (Chen et al., 2023).
