A patient walked into a 24 - hour emergency facility complaining of gastro-intestinal distress, vomiting and was hyperventilating. The patient further revealed that she was a foodie and had just returned from a food festival in San Antonio. The PA obtained a stool specimen and a vial of blood from the patient. These patient specimens were immediately taken to an on-site medical laboratory for analysis. Given this limited information and history, what assumptions does the laboratory personnel make about this patient given her symptoms and history? What laboratory tests can be done to find out what bacterial organisms might be involved in her illness?
