Assignment Question -
Task: Building on the course materials, apply the knowledge of sociolinguistics and language teaching to a comparative study of policies of teaching English in two countries. One should be your own country and the other should be a country that you are less familiar with. Select your countries based on a specific interest and/or justification (e.g., you've always wanted to know about the policies and practices in country X and Y. OR In our course, after doing some of the readings, you developed an interest for the policy context in X country... OR You are fascinated with the language landscape and the use of English in X country because ...). In other words, select countries you are genuinely interested in investigating.
Stages:
1. Present the context of each country looking at policy requirements: status (official languages), varieties of English, and domains of use (actual use), education policy and role of English Language Education.
2. Choose two aspects to discuss from the following list. Use the concepts learned from the course and your own readings to analyse and critique the policies of teaching English in the two countries.
i. What language ideologies do the policies seem to support (e.g., multilingualism, bilingualism, translingualism, etc.)? Use the course readings and concepts to analyse and critique specific passages from the policy documents.
ii. How do the policies define the (language) identity of the learners in the classroom and beyond? Compare the role(s) from the policy documents with various roles discussed in the course readings or the literature you found.
iii. To what extent do policy documents reflect language variation in regional/national contexts? Use the course readings to discuss the differences between policy and practice in language variation in regional/national contexts.
3. Conclude your comparative study by considering the following question: How could the policies on the two chosen areas be revised and expanded if you were minister of education in one of the two countries?
