Introduction to Business Analytics
Assessment - Industry Report
Assessment Description
The assessment is an in-class assessment requiring generation of insight following the application of analytics tools. This insight is to be captured in a Word document answering 3 questions (Parts A, B & C)
Assessment Overview
Part A: Data Analysis and Descriptive Analytics (200 words)
You are provided a data file containing characteristics relating to the performance of surfers (people who physically ride waves at the beach). You are to undertake descriptive analytics for the data file provided. The column headings are largely self-explanatory and can be further understood with a little research.
A Word report is to be completed with the infographic software of your choice - either Power BI or Tableau.
The following questions are to be answered for the data set provided:
Develop personas for both male and female surfers, using the data provided. Provide a few paragraphs interpreting these personas.
Generate summary statistics for 3 of the variables in the data set, supported by visualisations. Provide a few paragraphs interpreting this data.
Identify which variables are positively correlated to "Overall Performance", along with supporting data. Provide an interpretation of the variables correlated with "Overall Performance". This interpretation of the data includes what makes a good performing surfer.

Convert a column of data from non-metric to metric data. Produce a visualisation of the results and explain any limitations with this data conversion process.
Part B: Leadership and organization of Analytics staff
Refer to your Lecture notes for this section
In your own words, write a short paragraph (not dot points) on the benefits of an analytics-centric organization and characteristics of good analytics leadership.
In your own words, write a short paragraph (not dot points) comparing centralized versus decentralized ways of organizing analytics staff and the advantages and disadvantages of each one.
In your own words, write a short paragraph (not dot points) on how you would assess analytics capability in an organisation, taking into account recent developments in analytics.
"In your own words" means minimal reliance on AI generated content.
Part C: Example of Predictive Analytics in addressing a specific business problem for a specific business
(300 words)
Describe how predictive analytics can be used as part of a solution to a business problem with reference to ONE real-world case study of your own choosing.
You will need to conduct independent research and consult resources provided in this subject. Describe how the chosen business specifically uses Predictive Analytics and provide references to support your view.
