Manage Discussion Entry One source of health data that happens on a national level comes from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) which is conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS).

This process happens by phone interview where the respondents are asked numerous questions related to their health and health behaviors. The National Health Interview Survey has been used for more than 50 years. Recent health stats from the National Health Interview Survey in regards to morbidity rates as of January 2017, shows that the Number of adults with diagnosed heart disease was 28.4 million and that the percent of adults with diagnosed heart disease was 11.7%.

The data exampled that is done on a local level is that from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey (BRFSS). "These data are collected by individual states, territories, and the District of Columbia through cooperative agreements with the CDC (Cottrell, 2014) ." When looking at the map view, listed under the sortable stats for winnable battles, the heart disease death rate shows California at 142.7 whereas the national average is 167.

These numbers are taken from an age-adjusted rate of heart disease deaths per 100,000 population.

I believe the heart disease rates are extremely high due to lack of physical exercise and dietary choices. So many Americans take for granted what is available and allow ignorance to greater knowledge sit as the reason to not do better.

In such an unfortunate circumstance, more can be done if health education was available to all and that people chose to take responsibility for themselves and their health.
