Write a paper on the topic described below. Your paper should:
- clarify the position(s) being examined
- elaborate the argument(s) for or against the position in question
- carefully assess the adequacy and strength of the argument(s) by considering possible responses, counter-arguments, or counter-examples; and
- offer your own overall assessment of where the arguments for and against the position being considered leave us--should we accept, reject, or remain neutral regarding this orientation, view, or position?
Topic I: Locke and Rousseau.
Write a 4-6 page paper in which you address all of the following:
1. Compare Locke and Rousseau on the State of Nature. How do their conceptions of human nature differ? What do they have in common?
2. Why, on Locke's view, do we leave the State of Nature? What is Rousseau's explanation for our leaving the State of Nature? What happens to human nature when humans leave the State of Nature, on each view?
3. What, on Locke's view, is the most dangerous thing about living in the State of Nature? What does Rousseau think are the disadvantages of the State of Nature? Why does Rousseau think we leave the State of Nature?
4. Critically assess the views of Locke and Rousseau on government. Which philosopher do you think is more nearly correct in their account of human beings and the ideal form of government for them, and why?
