Part 1: Annotated Bibliography and Essay Proposal
Annotated Bibliography
Pick one of the questions to answer. Then, as preliminary work for your essay, begin your research by creating an annotated bibliography of at least five sources that you will use for your research paper. These are to be scholarly works-either articles or books-beyond the course readings.
Answer one of the following essay questions.
1. Focusing on causes and consequences, compare the experience of upper income countries (for example, Canada, United States) with lower-middle income and lower income countries (for example, Pakistan, India) in terms of their experiences with industrialization and urbanization.
2. Can renewable energy become the predominant source of energy in the world in the twenty-first century? What would need to change economically, socially, and politically for this to happen?
3. Agree or disagree with the following statement:
Urbanization constitutes a serious threat to the future (and present) ecological well-being of the entire Earth. Justify your position.
1. Compare and contrast two measures of development: the Human Development Index and the Gross National Happiness Index. Outline what each of these "systems" examines, highlights, and emphasizes.
Ultimately, what is each measuring? Assess the merits and drawbacks of each. Use specific examples (countries and their particular situations) in your analysis.

2. The map must have an appropriate title-a description of what is displayed on the map. For example, "The Major Cities of Southern Saskatchewan."
3. Maps should have a north arrow of some type (displaying latitude and longitude coordinates, for example) that aids in orienting the region on the surface of the earth.
4. The map must be dated: when was the map made?
5. The map should include a key or legend that is set apart from the map and enclosed in a box.
6. The map should differentiate between places. For example, the labels for countries should be in a different font or style of label than those for cities. This must be done consistently on the map, but may vary from one map to another.
7. In reproducing a map for one of your assignments, you must follow the academic style guidelines for the academic referencing system you have chosen.
