Explaining Crime Assignment - Critical Theoretical Review

Task Description and Requirements -
For this task you are required to:
Step 1 - Choose two of the theories covered in weeks 2-8 of the semester (excluding the theories covered in assignment 1: Reflective Statement - i.e. weeks 1-3).
Step 2 - Contrast and compare the two theories in relation to a) how they 'explain' crime and b) inform the way(s) we respond to crime and social harm.
Step 3 - Submit a comparative analysis of the two criminological theories, including an evidenced opinion on which of the two you believe is most useful for explaining and responding crime and why.
Rationale for the Assessment Exercise - The purpose of this assessment task is to:
a) Encourage you to critically engage with key criminological theories.
b) Build your understanding and knowledge of the drivers and causes of crime and social harm.
c) Develop your research and critical analysis skills.
Assessment Criteria -
1. Demonstrate adequate understanding of two theoretical perspectives.
2. Accurately define selected key terms and concepts.
3. Demonstrate the ability to effectively compare and contrast two theoretical perspectives.
4. Clearly articulate your work in an academic style.
5. Reference sources correctly using the Harvard system.
For this assessment exercise you may choose two theories from the following list:
1. Social disorganisation.
2. Strain theory.
3. Labelling theory.
4. Social learning theory.
5. Rational choice theory.
6. Marxist/radical theory.
7. Feminist criminologies.
