Question
The CrowdStrike outage led to disruptions in the communication systems like billing procedures, scheduling and check in procedures. This made it hard for doctors and nurses to access patient's medical records leading to delay in the process of patients being seen by doctors. The electronic medical records were significantly disrupted in major hospitals like Cleveland clinic which delayed clinical operations including surgeries and in turn affecting patient care. Patient care was greatly affected as there was a challenge in processing tests and accessing diagnostics tools. From the outage, the lessons that were learnt included: Hospitals need backup plan and systems that would keep the system running in case there is a problem with technology. It also enlightened on the importance of better communication of software vendors, and the need of fast help to intervene when a problem comes. Fast help can prevent pressure since there will be a plan to keep the system running even if there will be a CrowdStrike outage. Another lesson was the importance of complete testing procedures of the system that can help to identify risks very early. Using tools to monitor systems in real-time can catch issues early and prepare.
