Communication Style Variations among Cultures. How do you think that the information about verbal and nonverbal communication styles can help officers in their approach to Asian/Pacific American citizens? Does understanding the cultural components of the styles and behavior help you to become more sensitive and objective about your reactions? Provide some examples of rephrasing questions to elicit responses that show understanding and intended actions on the part of Asian/Pacific Americans.

Self-Monitoring and Avoidance of Law Enforcement. Why do you think many Asian/Pacific Americans keep to their own communities and express the desire for self monitoring and community resolution of their problems? When are such efforts desirable? When are they ineffective? How can police agencies be of greater service to Asian/Pacific American communities in this regard?

Racism: Effects on Blacks and Whites. Under the "Historical Information" section in this chapter, the authors state that slavery has created great psychological and social problems for succeeding generations of black citizens. How does the legacy of slavery continue to impact both blacks and whites? What are the implications for law enforcement?

Inner Cities. The vicious cycle that is created in urban areas, especially where citizens have become increasingly armed with highly sophisticated weapons. Consequently, officers must take more self-protective measures. Each views the other with fear and animosity and approaches the other with extreme defensiveness. Obviously, there is no simple answer to this widely occurring phenomenon, and police alone cannot solve it. Discuss your observations of the way officers cope with the stresses of these potentially life-threatening situations and how the coping or lack thereof affects relations with African Americans and other minorities. What type of support do police officers need to handle this aspect of their job? Do you think police departments are doing their job in providing the support needed?
