Question
Khadija (she, 16) is a junior in high school in Riverside. She lives with her mom, 2 sisters, aunt and 2 male cousins in a 3 bedroom apt. where they were resettled 2 years ago. Her family are refugees from Somalia and this is their 3rd relocation since living in Detroit and Boise. Her memory is fragmented as they have moved around a lot.
Khadija was referred to therapy by her school counselor, who noticed that her grades have dropped, she is having trouble fitting into her new school and often falls asleep in class.
Khadija's father and uncle were killed by militants in Somalia over 10 years ago. She keeps her father's picture on her night table and keeps him in her daily prayers.
Khadija's mom, Ayaan, lives with PTSD, having watched her husband and brother die. She has not adjusted to life in the US and misses her homeland terribly. Ayaan's brother's wife, Shanti, provides most of the financial support for their household. Since Shanti works a lot she is not often at home but has a close bond with Khadija and Ayaan's other daughters.
Khadija, as the oldest daughter, feels the weight of responsibility to care for her siblings and young cousins since her mom is disabled and her aunt is the breadwinner. Caring for the household means that she doesn't have time for schoolwork or enough sleep. She is disappointed in herself for falling behind as she really wants to go to law school someday.
