Describe a class in which you were a strategic learner in order to pass a test but did not come away from the class with a deep learning experience. When reflecting on your learning experiences, what prevented you from a deep learning experience? As a nurse, how can you remove similar barriers to deep learning from those in your care? Although there are times when memorizing facts is needed, what can you do to promote deep learning as you memorize? How does deep learning translate to patient education and the concept of lifelong learning in healthcare?

There are three main types of learning strategies - deep, surface, and strategic. Surface learning involves memorization of facts and details. Student often use this strategy to get through a test, but then quickly forget the material. Deep learning is a learning strategy that promotes conceptual learning and the linking of new information to old information. Deep learning is thought to foster retention and life-long learning. Strategic learning is considered a mix of surface and deep learning. It is goal-directed and students are motivated by grades (Whitman-Price & Godshall, 2009).
