Mohandas K. Gandhi was a great champion of compassion whose nonviolent campaign convinced the British to leave India with little bloodshed and loss of life. He was assassinated by a fellow Hindu for loving his enemies because he negotiated with leaders of the Muslim community in India whom most Hindus considered the enemy.
