Discussion Thread: A Christian Perspective of Behaviorism Behavioristic techniques can be utilized when we find a healthy balance between maintaining a Christian worldview, and implementing techniques that reward desirable behaviors and punish undesirable behaviors. After reflecting on the verses, I think it is crucial to understand that we should always be aware of the consequences that follow our actions. Especially when a reward system such as Behavior Contracts, Token Economies and stickers etc. is used to encourage positive behavior. I have used multiple behavioristic techniques throughout the years myself. In general, I have had positive experiences while implementing techniques, but I have often asked myself if these techniques are actually intrinsically motivating. As mentioned in our textbook, it is recommended to utilize natural instructional opportunities to encourage intrinsic motivation (Snowman & McCown, 2014, ch. 7). I personally believe that it is important to act as a role model in order to achieve a change of heart. Implementing multiple techniques may not be successful if a person is not willing to change negative behavior on their own (especially when working with older students). I have often observed teachers rewarding desirable behaviors excessively which eventually may cause problems. We can find a balance in utilizing behavioral techniques and maintaining our Christian worldview, when we build a strong fundament that applies multiple techniques, encourages intrinsic motivation and reflects our faith. Additionally, authentic and supportive interactions with students help teachers learn the needs and interests of each student. Whenever I experienced a change of heart it was not because a desirable behavior was rewarded. The people that showed understanding and provided encouragement in challenging times made all the difference; a reward may be an additional support but, in the end, it is the people around us that make us who we are. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness 8 and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us" (The Holy Bible, NIV, 2011).
