A chemistry professor had tenure teaching at State A University. The professor moved to State B for a one-year teaching and research assignment at the University of State B. The professor signed a one-year lease for an apartment across the street from the University of State B campus. And the professor rented her home in State A to some graduate students for the school year. Unbeknownst to the professor, her next-door neighbor was under investigation for fraud, theft, money laundering, and distribution of stolen property. A few months before the professor's term at State B was over, the police obtained a no-knock warrant to search the neighbor's apartment and arrest the neighbor. Unfortunately, the officers serving the warrant misread it and entered the professor's apartment. The officers broke down the door to the professors apartment and restrained her for almost half an hour before realizing their mistake. The professor filed claims for violation of her civil rights under both federal and state law against the individual police officers in the Southern District Court for State B.
