Assignment:
Can I get a conclusion paragraph for this passage?
In Book 4 of Plato's The Ideal State, Socrates uses a variety of rhetorical devices to compel and influence his listeners. He uses analogy, allegory, and myth to support his arguments while making spiritual, emotional, and symbolic appeals. All of these techniques support Plato's greater goal of defining the real world and illuminating the potential characteristics of an idealized world in the debate. Socrates starts by making an appeal to the divine. He explains that his interlocutors shouldn't be shocked that he doesn't know how to arrange the city because he is neither a politician nor a general.
Then, he turns to signs to support his claim that only civic justice can organize the city in a way that is just. This sparks a conversation about justice, which Socrates views as a property of the soul rather than the city. Then he turns to grief, asking his listeners to picture what it would be like to live in an unfair city. This brings up the topic of the soul, which Socrates asserts is eternal and capable of reincarnation in various guises.
