Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate an e-mail intervention designed to change physical activity behavior in the workplace. Design: A two-group, pretest/posttest research design was conducted to compare the effects between the intervention group and the control group. Participants: Employees with access to a work e-mail address (N = 2,100) were randomly assigned to either the intervention group (n = 1100) or the control group (n = 1000). Intervention: The intervention group received one e-mail per week for 12 weeks focused on being physically active at work. The control group received no e-mail messages during the 12 week study. Outcomes: Physical activity was assessed using a self-report questionnaire before (Time 1) and after (Time 2) delivering the intervention. Results: No differences in physical activity were reported between groups at Time 1 (p > .05). The intervention group was more physically active than the control group at Time 2 (p < .05). Conclusion: E-mail is a promising mode of delivery for changing physical activity behavior in the workplace. What is the independent variable(s) in this study?
