Problem: Say you went skiing in Keystone, Colorado (elevation 9,173 feet), and you felt a little light-headed and tired, prompting you to consider how the fractional saturation of your hemoglobin changes at this elevation. Given that that your hemoglobin has a Hill coefficient of 3.0, and a P50 of 27 torr:

  1. What would be the change in fractional saturation of your hemoglobin at this elevation in your lungs where the PO2 is 65 torr at ~9000 feet, vs 105 torr in College Park (elevation 69 feet)?
  2. How does that explain your light-headedness and the muscle weakness symptoms associated with altitude sickness? Give a biochemical explanation.
  3. People who live at high elevations eventually acclimate and their hemoglobin P50 is changed to accommodate the difference in PO2? Explain how this could occur with relevant molecular details.
