Knowing that every patient is a unique individual greatly improves the ability of nurses to interact with patients successfully. In order to develop positive relationships with their patients, nurses need to be able to listen to their patients' thoughts and concerns regarding their cultural practices, beliefs, and healthcare traditions.

A nurse can only provide care that is culturally competent if she has the right attitude and learns the right things to improve her transcultural nursing skills. As a result, a nurse who is culturally competent needs to accept, understand, appreciate, and know about the different communities that will be getting nursing care services. In a culturally varied society, nurses must avoid bias and negative attitudes that could get in the way of providing culturally competent nursing care. Nurse's should pay attention to the patient's beliefs, values, and practices. A culturally competent nurse knows about and cares about the different cultures in a population. This helps her make and keep culturally competent nursing care plans that fit the needs of a society with many different cultures.

Having the knowledge and skills needed for culturally competent nursing care makes sure that a nurse knows enough about the unique culture, ethnicity, customs, values, religious practices, and norms of the culture that needs nursing care. So, the nurse will be able to learn how to provide care that fits the unique cultural background. To be able to provide care that is culturally competent, a nurse must be able to meet the cultural needs of the patient.
