Question

If people did not believe in evolution before, I hope they now understand that there is something going on that causes the coronavirus to change into more dangerous variants. New variants of the virus that arise as mutations happen in the virus genome, and those that are more contagious spread quickly, outcompeting the older variants. This fight between humans and the virus is very much like an evolutionary arms race, and as often happens, humans are running behind, fighting against evolution. How can humans ever get ahead in this race? Or will we always have to play "catch up" against new diseases? What have you learned about evolution that can explain this pattern? The Red Queen hypothesis proposes that a species must constantly adapt, evolve, and proliferate to survive a race against opposing species. How might this hypothesis illustrate the dilemma?
