Today it has been about 42 years since polio has been eliminated in the United States, there has not been a case of polio since 1979. Polio was first an epidemic in 1894 where it tended to cause epidemics during the summer months and seemed to hit every few years rather than all at once. This virus though can be recovered from but, can cause the individual to be disabled through life after being infected. In addition, polio is a virus that enters through the GI tract infecting the individual due to transmission of saliva or feces to the mouth. This is different from COVID because with COVID the infections will happen in the lungs and are airborne transmitted.
