Case Scenario 3: Gossiping in a Healthcare Clinic
Having recently graduated from a healthcare program, you are excited to begin your professional work in a healthcare clinic. Although you had some clinical experiences in your healthcare training, during your first month on the job, you repeatedly witness behavior on the part of fellow co-workers/professions, which you find bothersome. Although it is a busy clinic, with a full complement of patients on a daily basis, you observe that co-workers seem to find time to comment on and gossip about patients, as the latter arrive for and depart from their appointments. Within earshot, you hear comments such as "Crazy is back," "Oh no, your favorite smelly patient is on the clinic list for today," "Well, clueless still has not left her cheating husband," "Never here on time, Edna is late, yet again," and "Ugh, their kids are such rambunctious brats." Although you absolutely love your new job, you are increasingly bothered by what you hear and witness on the part of fellow co-workers, some of whom are quite senior to you. You contemplate what, if anything, you ought to do.
Identify, in your own words, the "ethical dilemma" raised in the Case Scenario that you chose.
Why would you characterize what you identified, above, as an "ethical dilemma" relative to the Case Scenario that you chose?
