Data analysis and interpretation - Qualitative data

Assignment outline

In order to ascertain your understanding of qualitative research methods, we require you to undertake qualitative analysis on a data set that has already been collected for you. A small focus group was conducted and has been transcribed verbatim for you to undertake analyses on.

The results of the analysis should be reported in a manner expected in a published piece of research (in line with APA 6th Edition guidelines). Although minor editorial differences exist, most of the mainstream sport and exercise journals adhere to APA guidelines and will give an indication of the style if required. Please double-space your work and use size 12 font (Arial or Times New Roman).

Analysis

Use one method of qualitative data analysis to analyse the focus group transcript provided.

Required Structure

Carry out a qualitative analysis of the key content of this data, and adhere to the following sections:

Methodology: A short methodology including information about your chosen analysis and justifying its use with this data. It is up to you to decide which method you use, there is not always a right or wrong method. As long as you can justify why it is appropriate that will be sufficient.

Results: A results section that presents the findings (e.g., themes) that you have generated from your analysis. This section should be in-line with the results section of published qualitative research in sport and exercise journals. This section provides evidence of your data coding, generation of themes and, a write up of key emergent themes. The section should also include your research question. You may with to consider using tables/figures if appropriate, and please provide evidence of the complete data coding process as an Appendix.

Reflexive commentary: In the reflexive commentary, we would like you to consider whether the methods used to gather the data or to analyse it may have influenced the emergent themes and what meaning or relevance this analysis may have on your findings.

Conduct, interpret and report appropriate methods of qualitative analysis of textual data sets in the fields of sports science, psychology and coaching.
