Question 1.

A 52 year old female cancer patient developed sepsis. A blood culture was ordered and the anaerobic bottle was positive at 48 hours. The aerobic bottle was negative. The anaeriobic bottle was subcultured. A Gram stain showed small Gram negative poorly staining pleomorphic cocco-bacilli. The CDC agar grew medium size white non hemolytic colonies after 72 hours. There was robust growth on KVLB & grey colonies with black precipitates surrounding the colonies on BBE. No growth

Is this organism an anaerobe, aerobe, or facultative anaerobe?

What is the presumptive identification?

Why did the organism grow well on KLVB agar?

Why did the organism generate black precipitate on BBE agar?

If the BBE agar was not black, what other member of this genus might be present
