Analyse and Evaluate Numerical And Statistical Information Assignment - Unit review: Stats report: Statistics
Activity 1 - Survey purpose and outline
You have become interested in how the demographic factors of how
- age
- gender and
- educational levels
affect people's attitude to topical issues such as global warming, the drinking age, recycling and various other social issues.
In this assignment you will:
Construct and administer a survey to at least twenty people,
Collect and analyse the results and
Present a final report.
You will in total need to ask at least 5 questions,
- 2 of your own relevant to the topic and
- 3 demographic questions
Survey questions - You may ask any two questions you want. Think of a subject that you may expect to see a variation in response due to the demographic factors that we are also measuring.

Please discuss below and refer to age difference, gender and educational standards?
Age
Gender
Educational levels
2.0 Demographic Questions - these are compulsory and must be included in your survey
2.1 Age
In your report you will be comparing the survey responses of your questions with the age of your respondents. You will be calculating the mean and standard deviation of the age of your respondents and analysing the difference if any, in the means, and discussing the significance of this result in terms of standard deviation
2.2 Gender
You will need to ask what gender you survey participants are. Some people do not identify with either male or female. How will you construct your survey to cater for them?
2.3 Educational level

- High, TAFE Advanced diploma, partial or full completion of a university degree.
How will you frame these questions?
It may be useful to break the questions up into multiple checkboxes to populate your educational categories eg what is the highest level of education you have achieved?
Please discuss with your lecturer before proceeding.
Activity 3 - Conduct a survey
There are many ways of conducting a survey including paper based face to face or electronically.
Paper based; you will need to use a word processing application to produce the survey, print it out and ask people to do it.
Electronically: You can use an application like Survey monkey or Google forms to make a survey. You can then share the survey by emailing the link to your contacts, sharing on social media and ask people to do it.
It is also possible to have the survey on your phone, mail the link to yourself and ask people to do it by passing over your phone.
If you already have a Gmail address or have used Google drive. Google forms may be a good option.
Activity 4 - Analyse Method
Once you have collected your results you will need to analyse them. You will need to do calculations for mean and standard deviation, percentage, construct tables, frequency histograms, stem and leaf plots and make graphs. You will need to include several forms of graphs included pie charts and column charts. You can do this paper based using rulers and graph paper or electronically utilizing a spreadsheet such as google sheets or Microsoft excel.
Activity 5 - Final Report
The final report need to be presented separately. It will need to include your results, tables, graphs, analysis and discussion. It will need to have the following headers; Introduction, Methodology, Results / Analysis and Conclusion. If you are doing it manually the tables and graphs can be attached to your report eg -see graph 1 attached. If you are using a word processing application they can be included in the body of your report.
5.1 Introduction
Discuss why you chose your survey questions, refer to any personal interest or issue of social concern raised by the questions. Discuss what your expectations of the survey will be - see 1.1.
5.2 Methodology
Discuss how you implemented the survey, what tools did you use? What steps did you take to get a mix of ages, genders and educational levels of your participants? How did you recruit your participants? What problems occurred in the implementation of your survey and how did you deal with them?
5.3 Results and analysis
You will need to analyse the responses of one survey question in relation to the demographic questions. Did a person's age, gender or educational level make a difference in their responses to one your questions -choose the one that whose results seems the most interesting.
5.3.1 Age
You will need to make a table of results and produce graphs. For your questions construct a frequency table of the results comparing the different ages of respondents with your survey questions. Calculate the mean and standard deviation of participant's vs the response of your survey questions. Are these differences significant - discuss in terms of standard deviation.
5.3.2 Gender
Compare the gender of your respondents with their response to your survey questions. Create tables, charts and calculate percentages. Do the genders of your respondents affect their response to your questions? Discuss in terms of percentages.
5.3.3 Educational level
Compare the Educational level of your respondents with their response to your survey questions. Create tables, charts and calculate percentages. Do the Educational level of your respondents affect their response to your questions?
Discuss in terms of percentages.
5.4 Conclusion
What was the overall result of your survey? Did your results differ from what you expected? Are there any social or personal implications of your survey results? What are the limitations of your survey in terms of sample size and selection? Can you generalize any findings of your survey to the wider Australian populations? How would you improve your survey to get more valid results?
