1- Single and double slit diffraction :
You begin the wave optics experiment by observing the diffraction pattern for single and double slits using a red laser pointer (wavelength of 636nm).
Question 1: Describe the similarities and differences between the diffraction patterns for slits a and Does the change in pattern support the theory of single slit diffraction patterns?
Question 2: Describe the similarities and differences between the diffraction patterns for slits a and Does the change in pattern support the theory of adding a second aperture for the laser light to go through?
Question 3: Describe or sketch what the double slit with 0.04 mm width and 0.50 mm separation diffraction pattern would look like. Compare its characteristics with the diffraction patterns for slits b and d.
Question 4: Calculate the width of the central bright fringe for diffraction pattern b. Be sure to calculate its uncertainty as well. You may use the small angle approximation in your calculation.
Question 5: Count the number of bright interference fringes within the central envelope of pattern d. Does the number of fringes you count agree with the width of the central envelope you found in Calc. 1a? Calculate the theoretical number of interference fringes there should be.
