When high-energy charged particles move through a transparent medium with a speed greater than the speed of light in that medium, a shock wave, or bow wave, of light is produced. This phenomenon is called the Cerenkov effect. When a nuclear reactor is shielded by a large pool of water, Cerenkov radiation can be seen as a blue glow in the vicinity of the reactor core due to high-speed electrons moving through the water. In a particular case, the Cerenkov radiation produces a wave front with an apex half-angle of52.5°. Calculate the speed of the electrons in the water. The speed of light in water is2.25 108 m/s.
Light of wavelength 669 nm is incident on a double slit. The angle between the central bright fringe and the second dark fringe is 4.90°. Determine the separation d of the slits
A balance scale has unequal arms. The scale is balanced with am = 1.50-kg block on the left panand a M = 2.29 kg block on theright pan (see figure). If the 2.29-kgblock is removed from the right pan and the 1.50-kg block is then moved to the right..
Suppose a power line produces a 5.1×104-T peak magnetic field 60 times each second at the location of a neuron brain cell of radius 6.0 ×106 m. Determine the maximum magnitude of the induced emf
For the following questions, if the answer requires a derivation, clearly show the equations, the calculation and units . Use your own paper and not the space between the problems.
What must the minimum muzzle velocity be for the shell to clear the top of the cliff?
A 54-kg skier coasts up a snow-covered hill that makes an angle of 25° with the horizontal. Find the work done by the kinetic frictional force that acts on the skis
the yellow light from a helium discharge tube has a wavelength of 587.5 nm. when this light illuminates a certain
The string of a conical pendulum is 54.0 cm long and the mass of the bob is 0.27 kg. Find the angle between the string and the horizontal when the tension in the string is eight times the weight of the bob
Chromium is produced by reacting its oxide with aluminium. If 354 g of Cr2O3 and 158 g of Al react to form 204 g of Al2O3, how many grams of Cr are formed.
The function y(x, t) = (25.0 cm) cos(?x - 26?t), with x in meters and t in seconds, describes a wave on a taut string. What is the transverse speed for a point on the string at an instant
A large helicopter is used to lift a heat pump to the roof of a new building. How much force must the air exert on the helicopter
Bumblebees actively foraging in the field have been found to be electrically charged, due largely to air resistance as they fly. The charge carried with a bee, which can be as great as 93 pC (pico = 10-12), is thought to play a significant role in po..
